The Spanish National Police have dismantled a criminal network involved in the large-scale illegal trade of Freon refrigerant gases. In a coordinated enforcement action across the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Madrid, officers conducted eleven raids on nine companies linked to the case.
Authorities seized 4,781 illegal cylinders containing 48,515 kg of Freon gas, none of which were accompanied by the traceability documentation required under European environmental regulations. The black-market value of the seized gases is estimated at around €3 million.
Severe Environmental Risk
Freon gases are widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. However, many types of fluorinated gases have extremely high global warming potential, sometimes thousands of times greater than CO₂. For this reason, the European Union enforces strict legal controls on their production, importation, sale and use.
This criminal network had been distributing refrigerant gases without authorization or regulatory oversight, posing serious environmental risks and violating EU environmental law.
Organized Cross-Border Activity and Financial Crime
Investigations revealed the group had been operating since 2023, supplying illegal refrigerant gases into both Spanish and international markets while bypassing environmental and tax controls. Authorities also uncovered extensive money-laundering activity involving shell companies and international transfers, with an estimated value exceeding €10 million.
Five core suspects have been arrested and face multiple charges including environmental crime, smuggling, fraud, tax evasion, money laundering and participation in organized crime. The investigation remains ongoing.
